Shield Source Incorporated performs monitoring on the emissions that are created by the facility. These emissions can be in the form of gases or liquids. The gas emissions are monitored by the flow of air through a stack. Samples of this air are continuously monitored for tritium gas and oxides. Shield Source has internal levels for tritium gas and oxide emissions that are set to ensure that no external emission levels are exceeded. The internal levels per year for tritium gas is 170 TBq and for tritium oxide is 50 TBq. Table 1 shows the total emissions of tritium gas and oxide for the last five years. Clearly this shows that at no time has Shield Source come close to exceeding these levels. The tritium gas and oxide are also monitored in the environment through an environmental monitoring program. Click here to find the data for the last three years of results for the air and water samples taken in the environmental monitoring program.

| TRITIUM | TRITIUM | |
| YEAR | GAS (TBq) | OXIDE (TBq) |
| 2004 | 90.83 | 17.34 |
| 2005 | 104 | 17.2 |

The liquid emissions in the form of tritiated water is collected and sampled. The allowable level for release of the tritiated water to the sewer systems is 100 GBq/year. Table 2 shows the releases of water to the sewer systems for the last five years. From this data Shield Source Incorporated maintains very low liquid emissions from the facility.

The external emission levels were determined based on assumptions that the critical receptor (a family living at the point of maximum observed tritium activity, which would be impossible but still selected as the scenario), would spend 100% of their time in the vicinity of the facility, obtain 100% of their drinking water, 75% of their plant produce and 100% of animal produce from the immediate vicinity. By using these very conservative values, Shield Source is confident that the public would not come close to receiving a dose of 1 mSv/year.
Each year Shield Source Incorporated prepares annual reports for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. These reports contain information regarding the emissions, doses to the pubic and environmental monitoring data. These reports once reviewed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission can be found by clicking here.
